Apr 25th, 2012

This year's political argument over same-sex marriage is already divisive; it shouldn't have to be confusing to boot. Gay Marriage Repeal Effort Off to Slow Start in Washington State?

Apr 9th, 2012

The drive to repeal marriage equality in Washington State is not off to an auspicious start, if the campaign's reported number of collected signatures supporting a November referendum is accurate. What are we to make of this? The Washington State Catholic Conference (WSCC), which represents the Catholic Bishops of the State of Washington on issues of public policy, has created a "Preserve Marriage Washington" (PMW) web page on their site. PMW is the campaign trying to roll back Washington's new marriage equality law. The WSCC's PMW page is given high prominence:... read_more

How Marriage Equality Was Won in Washington State

Mar 13th, 2012

When Washington's state legislature passed the marriage equality bill in February, it marked the culmination of a 17-year effort led by Sen. Ed Murray. The gay lawmaker took office in 1995, just as the state's Defense of Marriage Act, which outlawed same-sex marriage, was introduced. Republicans then in control of the state legislature considered the debate so offensive that they... read_more

Washington State: One Man Contacting Referendum 71 Signers to Open Dialogue About Marriage Equality

Mar 9th, 2012

Opponents of equality are currently collecting signatures in an attempt to challenge Washington state's new marriage equality law at the ballot through Referendum 74. But Washington conservatives have pushed back on same-sex couples' recognition before, through 2009s failed Referendum 71, a challenge to the state's "everything but marriage" domestic partnerships. At Purple Unions, we take marriage equality seriously. As a gay couple who have been together since 1992, we know that gay and lesbian couples can and do form long-term, stable, supportive relationships, and we believe the institution of marriage and all the responsabilities and benefits that come with it should be opened up to committed gay and lesbian couples everywhere. To this end, we created Purple Unions as a place where gay and lesbian couples can find gay friendly wedding vendors to help them plan their perfect wedding day.

Washington enacted domestic partnership legislation in 2007, and in 2009, the legislature upgraded the domestic partnership law to include the same benefits as full marriage (at least at the state level), without the name. An attempt was made in 2010 to repeal the law, but voters rejected it.

In February, 2012, the legislature passed a full marriage equality law. A referendum challenge is currently gathering signatures; if it fails, same sex couples will start marrying in June; otherwise it will be put on hold until the November election. The state also allows adoption by gay and lesbian couples.

We hope that you find these resources useful, and that you'll join us in the fight for marriage equality!
