At Purple Unions, we take marriage equality seriously. As a gay couple who have been together since 1992, we know that gay and lesbian couples can and do form long-term, stable, supportive relationships, and we believe the institution of marriage and all the responsabilities and benefits that come with it should be opened up to committed gay and lesbian couples everywhere. To this end, we created Purple Unions as a place where gay and lesbian couples can find gay friendly wedding vendors to help them plan their perfect wedding day. New York passed a civil unions bill in 2006, but attempts to pass marriage equality were frustrated by the state Senate, which famously voted the bill down last time in 2009. On June 24th, 2011, after furious wrangling over religious exemptions, the Senate finally passed the marriage equality bill and sent it to the governor two days before New York City's Gay Pride. The state may recognize valid gay marriages from other states - a recent court decision ruled in favor of this. New York also allows gay and lesbian couples to adopt.
