At Purple Unions, we take marriage equality seriously. As a gay couple who have been together since 1992, we know that gay and lesbian couples can and do form long-term, stable, supportive relationships, and we believe the institution of marriage and all the responsabilities and benefits that come with it should be opened up to committed gay and lesbian couples everywhere. To this end, we created Purple Unions as a place where gay and lesbian couples can find gay friendly wedding vendors to help them plan their perfect wedding day. Maine's legislature passed a marriage equality bill in May of 2009, and it was signed into law by the Governor. But a campaign was mounted to overturn this law, and in November Maine's gay marriage bill was overturned by the voters without ever having taken effect. In 2012, marriage equality activists were able to gather enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot, and on November 6th, marriage equality was passed into law by the state's voters, with gay and lesbian couples able to marry after December 6th (exact date is 30 days after Governor certifies the election results).
