Colorado House Democrats Seeking Republican Sponsor for Civil Unions

Apr 15th, 2012

A bill to establish civil unions still lacks a House sponsor nearly two months after passing out of a Senate committee, but that's because Democrats shepherding the measure remain intent on finding a Republican to champion the legislation before sending it over to the GOP-controlled chamber, backers said this week. Lawmakers in Colorado will most likely take up the issue of civil unions in this year's legislative session. At Purple Unions, we take marriage equality seriously. As a gay couple who have been together since 1992, we know that gay and lesbian couples can and do form long-term, stable, supportive relationships, and we believe the institution of marriage and all the responsabilities and benefits that come with it should be opened up to committed gay and lesbian couples everywhere. To this end, we created Purple Unions as a place where gay and lesbian couples can find gay friendly wedding vendors to help them plan their perfect wedding day.

Colorado currently does not allow or recognize marriages between gay and lesbian couples, although they do allow couples to enter into a "Designated Benificiary Agreement" conferring hospital visitation, medical decisionmaking (effective July 2009), and inheritance rights, according to HRC. The state does allow adoption by gay and lesbian couples.

We hope that you find these resources useful, and that you'll join us in the fight for marriage equality!
