At Purple Unions, we take marriage equality seriously. As a gay couple who have been together since 1992, we know that gay and lesbian couples can and do form long-term, stable, supportive relationships, and we believe the institution of marriage and all the responsabilities and benefits that come with it should be opened up to committed gay and lesbian couples everywhere. To this end, we created Purple Unions as a place where gay and lesbian couples can find gay friendly wedding vendors to help them plan their perfect wedding day. After the Massachusetts Superior Court ruled in favor of gay and lesbian couples, Massachusetts legalized gay marriage in May, 2004, becoming the first US state to sanction marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples. In 2007, an anti-gay marriage amendment was soundly defeated, and n 2008, the legislature voted to remove a residency requirement so that out of state couples could marry in Massacusetts. Massachusetts is also at the forefront of efforts to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act at the federal level so that its gay and lesbian citizens will be treated the same as its straight ones.Massachusetts also allows gay and lesbian couples to adopt. We hope that you find these resources useful, and that you'll join us in the fight for marriage equality!--Scott & Mark, Purple Unions |
