Our Wedding Story:
MARRIED TWICE BY DEAR FRIEND.
Susan and I have a loving and committed relationship. We met at a vineyard in Banks, Oregon and that meeting immediately changed our individual worlds. I had to leave the vineyard party suddenly to take a friend to the Emergency Room (long story--but just so you know, the emergency was related to a chronic illness, not wine!). When I left, I hadn't gotten Susan's contact information and she hadn't gotten mine.
At about 3 a.m. in the morning, I was sitting at home thinking "Darn!" and I had so much energy that I sat down with my guitar and wrote a song about this incredible woman I met and talked to but didn't know how to contact! A few days later we both emailed a common friend at nearly the same exact time and asked for further information. It's all history from there!
We had a ceremony in September 2002 and our dear friend who performed the ceremony got his license to marry couples in the State of Oregon as a way to honor us. We're glad he did, because on March 5, 2004, he married us again after we stood 3 hours in line at the Multnomah County building and purchased our marriage licenses. This was a particularly good day for Susan and I. We are expecting a child together and there are a number of issues that run through our heads at any given moment and almost all of them are legal issues.
While a valid marriage license does not answer all of our questions, it does feel like it moves us one step closer to validation and expanded legal rights that are at a minimum equal to heterosexual couples.
We have a great life together and wake up every day feeling blessed and honored to be in this relationship. We inspire each other. We know that we are better together than we could be alone. We respect each other. And most of all, we love each other.
